Tuesday night at Carlsbad High School, the Cavegirls began part two of District 5-4A action with a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats.
Carlsbad (9-11, 3-1) is in the running for a state playoff berth with a game Thursday night in Roswell and the home finale versus the Hobbs Eagles Tuesday night in Carlsbad.
The Cavegirls lone loss in district was against Hobbs on the road Oct. 18.
Cavegirls are hungry for postseason
Clovis (10-11, 1-3) put up a fight against the Cavegirls in all three matches as leads went back-and-forth. The Cavegirls gained the upper hand in the matches thanks to hot serves from Samantha Rodriguez, Annika Sowers, Arkia Cordova and Carly Younger.

“It’s this or nothing,” Morrill said of the Cavegirls remaining two games. “I have five seniors on the team they want to go on further.”
Scouting Roswell
The Cavegirls are 1-1 against the Lady Coyotes. Roswell defeated Carlsbad 3-1 at a volleyball tournament in Roswell during non-district action.
Carlsbad swept the Lady Coyotes 3-0 on Oct. 13 during district play in Carlsbad.
“We’ve got to have our blocking game on honestly. We’ve got to be prepared mentally,” Morrill said.
Roswell lost to Hobbs 3-2 Tuesday night in Roswell.

The Artesia High School Bulldogs and Lady Dogs soccer lost in the opening rounds of the 4A state playoffs Tuesday night.
The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors, the No. 9 team in the playoffs, upset the No. 8 Bulldogs (12-9) 3-1 in Artesia.
The Desert Warriors (11-5-5) advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals against the No. 1 Lovington Wildcats (17-2-1).
Goddard (14-7) shutout the Lady Dogs (9-12) 2-0 in Roswell Tuesday night.

Goddard the No. 5 seed in 4A travels to No. 4 Los Alamos in the quarterfinals.
Hope Christian from Albuquerque is the top girls’ team in 4A and hosts Silver High in the quarterfinals this weekend.
