Most students in Carlsbad will begin classes on Tuesday (Aug. 9). There’s a lot of excitement this year in what we hope will be the most normal school year since 2019. Students and parents have had a chance to meet with their teachers over the past week.
With the return to school comes an increase in obligation on our part in terms of safe driving around buses and in school zones. Many children are attending new schools this fall due to construction and changes in the school setup. They are therefore especially unfamiliar with areas where they are crossing the road. Please be extremely aware of speed limits and pay attention to pedestrians when driving near schools. Children may get out of a nearby-parked car at any time, so remain alert of all vehicles as well.
When around school buses, maintain a safe following distance. Remember that it is always illegal to pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload children.
Finally, please remember that Carlsbad has a “hands free” ordinance in place. Using a cell phone while driving near schools or school buses is an especially dangerous combination. Thanks for helping us ensure a safe start to this school season.
Aug. 17 will be another exciting day in Carlsbad. That will be the day that classes begin at Carlsbad’s Southeast New Mexico College, being called the “oldest and newest community college” in New Mexico.
It’s a great slogan – the college celebrated its 70th year of accomplishments in 2020. This past year, SENMC Carlsbad began a transition process from NMSU-Carlsbad to SENMC- an independent college that is still accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and affiliated with the State of New Mexico. The slogan captures what we’re hoping to see at the college – a program that takes the best from the college’s 70 year history and merges it with the advantage of local governance as an independent college. The college currently employs 41 full time faculty members, 72 full-time staff and 63 part-time faculty members. SENMC has a population of 2,000 students. We wish them all the very best in this new development.
Our summer concert series performer this upcoming weekend (Aug. 13) will be local band Redsky. This will be a free performance from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the water park gazebo. Just a reminder, the Carlsbad Water Park will remain open on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of September.
