Three City of Carlsbad Employees were among this year’s “40 Under 40” class, and we’re very proud to have all three with us.
Lt. Richard Cage, with the Carlsbad Police Department, has served with CPD for seven years and is currently the Professional Standards Supervisor. He was awarded supervisor of the quarter in 2018. He volunteers with the Citizens Police Academy, Junior Police Academy and National Night Out, as well as Special Olympics and Shop with a Hero. Richard is the son of Eddy County Sheriff Mark Cage.

Sarah Jones has been with the Carlsbad Public Library since 2018 and was promoted to director in 2020. Sarah did a great job with navigating our library through some of the challenges of COVID-19. She has also come up with a lot of new ideas and partnerships for the library, including the “Story Walk,” and “Makers Space.” Her hobbies include organizing a local book club – Sarah can’t stay away from books.
Edward VanScotter is our Assistant Museum Director, and he’s been with the Carlsbad Museum since 2016. He’s assisted at the museum with rebranding efforts, as well as planning collections and exhibits. He was a great help during our summer’s Hall of Fame induction of John Andrews and Anna Jane Sitton Hays. He is a member of the Pearl of the Pecos Arts & Culture District and participates in the Carlsbad Public Library Book Club.
Looking over this year’s list, there were so many other outstanding 40 Under 40 members representing private businesses, health care, education, nonprofits and many other organizations. Congratulations to everyone involved.
With so many other activities going on this week, please don’t forget that we’re also in the middle of an election. On the ballot is an important school mill levy issue, as well as contested City Council, School Board and College Board elections. The mill levy, HB33, would generate funds for the school district to purchase equipment and maintain buildings. This levy has been in place for many years.
Early voting began Oct. 16 and is taking place at the County Clerk’s Office at 325 S. Main Street. The election is just around the corner – Nov. 2, 2021. If you don’t know what’s going to be on your ballot, you can visit this site: https://voterportal.servis.sos.state.nm.us/WhereToVote.aspx to receive a sample ballot.
