Current-Argus sports reporter Matthew Asher dead at 37

Matthew Asher

Current-Argus sports reporter Matthew Asher died Sunday, July 18, of a pre-existing heart condition.

He was 37 years old.

Asher joined the Current-Argus staff in 2018. 

During his time with the Current-Argus, Asher reported on local high school athletics including the Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirls, Loving Falcons and Lady Falcons and Artesia Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

He also covered Carlsbad native Trevor Rogers’ rise in the major leagues, Ruidoso Downs horse racing and various non-sports events and businesses in Eddy County.

Asher was an award-winning reporter, taking several first- and second-place awards for sports reporting, sports writing and photography in the New Mexico Press Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest.

His story about how the New Mexico Activities Association prepares for the state basketball tournament won the 2020 award for best sports writing among Daily Class II newspapers.
