Mechanical failure was the apparent cause of a tank battery fire Sunday night south of Carlsbad, according to the Eddy County Fire Service (ECFS).
ECFS Deputy Chief of Operations Travis Olbert said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
He said ECFS and 11 units from four Eddy County Volunteer Fire Districts responded to the call around 6:49 p.m. on Buck Jackson Road.

“Nobody from the oilfield or fire units were hurt,” Olbert said.
He said the blaze was doused after five hours and firefighters spent two hours on scene conducting other extinguishing operations.
Susan Torres, spokesperson for the New Mexico, Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (ENMRD) said the New Mexico Oil Conservation Division (OCD) was notified of the fire and proper notifications were made to other agencies and authorities.
