Sunday was the 21st anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack in our nation’s history. More than 3,000 innocent lives were lost on 9-11-01. First responders, in particular, sustained heavy losses as they were attempting to help those who were in need.
This cowardly attack did not achieve its desired goal. Instead, the tragedy brought us together as one nation as millions sought to assist in any way they could. These deadly attacks will always serve as a reminder that there is evil in the world, but they also remind us of the importance of unity and bravery.
Sept. 11 is now known as Patriot Day. It is a holiday to honor the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.

Thank you again to our nation’s first responders and our members of the military, who are living examples of why Patriot Day is a national holiday.
In Carlsbad, Patricia and Robert Jacquez included a Sept. 11 tribute as part of their Jericho Walk celebration over the weekend. This event was an incredible success and a great celebration of the location dedication to faith.

Carlsbad had another busy past weekend, beginning with Homecoming. Congratulations to the Carlsbad Cavemen on their commanding, 55-14 win over Clovis. The Cavemen are now 2-2. They’ll play at Roswell this upcoming Friday.
Trevor Rogers is also doing very well recently. Trevor matched a season high with eight strikeouts over six innings last Wednesday. Despite his efforts, the Marlins lost to the Phillies, 4-3, but it was the second straight strong performance for Trevor. He gave up only a single run in six innings of pitching on Aug. 31. That was his return trip to the Majors after being placed on the injury list on July 29.
While rehabilitating in Triple A, Trevor pitched 12 strikeouts in six innings to Jacksonville. Media outlet reports have all been very optimistic. We expect a strong finish this year for this Carlsbad native as he sets the tone for the 2023 season.

Be sure to watch the 15th Annual ACM Honors on Tuesday (6-8 p.m. MST) on Fox. Carlsbad native Sonny Throckmorton, along with Shania Twain, will be receiving the “poet’s award” in recognition of their incredible career achievements.
Sincerely,
Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
